Vicky's ToRI 2003 Tidbits

I had the best intentions. I bought a Global Journal and packed it planning to be like Jack and write it all down as I went. So what happened? Well, my journal remained in my suitcase until the flight home. By the time we had finished partying every night writing it all down just wasn't in the cards and I wasn't disciplined enough to carry it with me everywhere so this will be little bits and pieces of my fun in Newport rather than a literary masterpiece as offered to us by Jack from the 2000 ToRI.

The Good

Cliff Walk
What's better than a walk where you can see amazing mansions and an ocean? The weather was great and the company of my Jailhouse Inn roomies, Tracy, Katie & Moss-E, was superb.

My Jailhouse Roomies
Tracy, Katie and Moss-E are the best - despite the fact that Katie & Moss-E are morning people!
Friends - Old & New
It was great seeing all the Cowsill.com veterans and lots of fun meeting some of the newbies to the site that made it to Newport.
Acappella Gold
What a hoot! These guys were amazing and a lot of fun. I never imagined that I'd be participating in a unique rendition of Hole in the Bottom of the Sea at the Wharf Pub in Newport, RI.

Billy Goode's
Hey a reasonable place to drink in Newport - here's a hint from Katie if you can see a sailboat don't order a drink! We really enjoyed the Friday night duo though I think our enthusiasm for Beatles tunes frightened some of the locals. Saturday was fun too but Barry, Susan, Richard & Robby on Sunday night was a great way to cap off the weekend.
Picnic at Ft. Adams State Park
What fun going through Maureen's scrapbook and meeting Lisa from MN and her husband (who was a good sport about being dragged along) and listening to the impromptu show put on by Barb & Moss-E. And, you have to love Chris Tovar's enthusiasm and generosity in driving Moss-E, Katie & I back into town. Katie, Moss-E & I got a totally un-solicited history lesson on the Irish in Newport from our cab driver on the way out to the picnic and let's just say that Chris' company was a lot more fun! I loved the view from the park - it was such a beautiful day.

Marissa's Birthday Party
Happy 17th Marissa!! A big thanks to Bob, Mary Jo and their family for sharing their time with us. The stories about the old days kept us all entertained and the cake was yummy.
Party on the Jailhouse Porch
So, when we lost Katie & Moss-E at ToRI after the show, Louise, Barbara & I headed back to the Jailhouse Inn. The plan was to rest before heading to Billy Goode's. When we didn't find Katie there, I called her to find out where she was and lo & behold apparently Katie & Moss-E scored free food from ToRI vendors and were on their way back with it for an impromptu party. Katie just has to throw some kind of party and she and Moss-E (her able assistant) were wonderful hostesses to: Louise, Barbara, Colleen, Barb, Kathryn, Lynne H, KimT & I. Oh, and they weren't the only ones who'd scored free food, Barb brought brownies and cookies for dessert - yummy!
Katie's Office
What would we have done if we hadn't happened into the convenience store and discovered that they had Internet access? The most fun posting was definitely Saturday night when a whole bunch of us crowded around the one monitor and caused the clerk to ask if all of us were going to use it - uh, YEAH! I should have taken a photo that night but didn't.

The Bad

Okay we know that nothing's perfect so here are a few things I could have lived without...

  • The humidity especially in the tent at ToRI on Saturday - ugh.
  • Newport prices - can you say where's the nearest ATM? I did a few times over the weekend.
  • The too short nights - I swear the nights are shorter in Newport!
  • Next door roomies knocking on the wall early in the morning - I am just not a morning person.

The Amazing

The Shows, The Shows, The Shows!
From All I Want to Be Is Me (ably handled by Richard) to Some Good Years (with the lead sung by Susan instead of Bob and Mary Jo adding the normal Susan parts) with stops along the way to cover lots of little known and rarely performed live Cowsill tunes, this was a completely amazing journey for any Cowsill fan. I loved the intros by Bob and Paul's "Wrong again" commentary on Saturday. The best part of it for me was seeing how much fun The Cowsills seemed to be having with it all!
Grow Old With Me
OMG - I loved, loved, loved Susan, Bob and Paul on this. It was soooooo good!

Grow Old With Me

Those Guys in the Background
Robby, Russ, Johnny Flanders, Mike MacDonald and Ryan Cowsill added so much to the whole experience and the sound of the show. I just wish it had been easier to take their photos!

4-Play
This band was such a terrific lead-in to The Cowsills on both days. They had the crowd (especially one of the restaurant workers) up and dancing. I completely enjoyed them on both days.
Love Shack!!
How much fun was this? The Cowsills and 4-Play, along with Cowsill kids and cousins all jammed together on this one and all I can say is they should do it more often and on more tunes. What an amazing end to ToRI!

Bob's Family on Love Shack
Love Shackin' It!

Richard
It was great to hear Richard sing All I Want To Be Is Me in addition to Vagabond this time. And, thanks for thinking about having something at Billy Goode's on Sunday night.
Bob
I loved seeing Bob enjoy the experience - gotta love that smile - and his talent and generosity never cease to amaze me. I have just one question for Bob - will you be adding Grow Old With Me to your regular set lists? Please!?!?!
Paul
Wow! Paul worked so hard and it was so great to see him out front so much and playing the bass. What an awesome job Paul did on everything he had the lead on: Crystal Claps, Covered Wagon, You're Not The Same Girl and Shine and what an beautiful job on Grow Old With Me. The most fun for me was seeing he and LouAnn dance during Love Shack though.
Barry
I just want to thank Barry for letting all of us invade his home turf and for singing for all of us at Billy Goode's after ToRI - what a trooper! I love what I've heard of the new CD too and can't wait to hear the rest.
Susan
Man do I love this woman's voice!! Susan's new song, Just Believe It, was great and I can't wait until I can own it - hint, hint!! Oh, and I have a question for Susan too - when are you coming to CA and singing with Bob again? Grow Old With Me reminded me just how much I miss hearing the two of them together.

Gee, guess I wrote enough even without doing it as I went along. What a great time I had and I'll be ready to do it all again in let's say another 3 or so years? :o)
